Carrying a Torch for Volunteers
Date : - 01/09/2009
The Attend Flame, an Olympic style torch, is travelling the length and breadth of the country to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the volunteering charity Attend.

On Friday 11 September the Flame will arrive at St George’s Hospital, Stafford and be handed by Colin Wilkinson, Chair of Stafford League of Friends, and Chairman of West Midlands Attend, to Steve Jones, Chairman of South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

The Flame will travel in procession across the St George’s site in a fire engine. It will be escorted by the full fire crew and retained fire officers, League of Friends staff and trustees, colleagues from St George’s and Stafford Hospitals, and the Mayor of Stafford, Jean Tabener, in the mayoral car.

The flame began its journey on the Western Isles of Scotland on 24 March 2009, 60 years to the day that Attend was founded. It will arrive in London on a vintage motorcycle in time for Attend’s 60th birthday celebration and AGM in October.

Attend has a long history in heath and social care. Since 1949, thousands of people have volunteered their time in hospitals and local communities. Stafford Hospitals League of Friends has been in existence for 51 years. Its members provide coffee bar facilities at St George’s and Stafford Hospital as well as raising money for gifts and treats for patients and larger projects such as the Brockington Unit Garden at St Georges and Intensive Care Unit relatives room at Stafford Hospital.

Colin Wilkinson, Chairman of the League of Friends said “We are very pleased to be receiving the flame and playing our part in celebrating Attend’s 60th birthday. Our volunteers work so hard and give their time willingly to help provide a comfortable experience for people in hospital, and for those visiting them. I am especially pleased that local firefighters, many of whom are also volunteers, are able to join in the celebration with us.”

Steve Jones, Chairman of South Staffordshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust added, “We really appreciate the contribution of our League of Friends who do so much for the people who use our services. Their commitment to the coffee bar, and tireless fundraising makes all the difference to people who are away from their home comforts and familiar surroundings.”
