Green Dean Leaves Somerset Academy
Date : - 25/08/2009
John Chester, Consultant Surgeon at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, has stood down as Dean of the Somerset Academy after completing two terms.

John was appointed Foundation Dean of the Academy in 2002. He was then charged with the organisation of medical student training in Somerset on behalf of the University of Bristol with student placements at Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Over 100 students at any one time may come to the Somerset Academy - which is one of seven Clinical Academies set up by the University of Bristol Medical School to train the doctors of the future.

John said "The job has been absorbing and it has been great to be able to work with young people preparing for a life in medicine. My colleagues have been generous with their time and expertise and very supportive, and I am grateful for their help".

"Because the students need to travel between their hospitals and accommodation, we have provided bicycles for them to use, which has helped the Academy's green credentials, while keeping the students fit!"

John is being replaced by Dr Stephen Hunter, Consultant Anaesthetist at Yeovil District Hospital. Stephen has been Associate Dean for six years. He said "This is an opportunity to have a positive influence on improving undergraduate medical education and to introduce new ways of teaching in the clinical environment. Future plans include looking at the use of simulators in clinical training and training more medical and other health care staff to become better teachers themselves".
