Reflecting on another busy year at Southend University Hospital |
Date : - 15/07/2009 |
A challenging but successful year is recorded in Southend University Hospital’s Annual Report and Accounts for 2008-2009.
The document reflects on the past year, recalling the pride in receiving top ratings from the Healthcare Commission for both the quality of service and the way the hospital manages its resources. In addition, Southend University Hospital was named in the 2008 Dr Foster’s Hospital Guide as having one of the lowest mortality rates in the country, recorded a welcome reduction in the number of healthcareassociated
infections and met the Department of Health’s 18-week referral to treatment target – and this in a year which brought the busiest winter period for the
hospital in almost 10 years.
Special highlights of the year included the installation of a £250,000 pharmacy robot which has revolutionised the speed and efficiency of dispensing medicines to wards and waiting patients; a successful StrokeBusters Appeal leading to the opening of a
new stroke unit which has improved the prognosis and outcome for stroke patients being treated at Southend; the creation of a new purpose-built resuscitation training room, and continued investment in new technology systems to benefit the care of
patients and improve the working lives of staff. During the year Southend University Hospital continued to play an active part in an increasing number of high-level clinical trials, and this was spotlighted at a well-attended clinical research awareness day.
Chief executive, John Gilham, said: “Reflecting back on another busy year, I am extremely proud of the way our staff have responded to the many challenges and
demands on their time, skills and energy. As ever, they have given their all. “As everyone knows, the health service is constantly evolving and I am sure the coming years will present us with equally demanding challenges. We are pressing ahead with our plans to streamline our services still further to make them more efficient and improve our patients’ experience of the hospital. These include a new
ward block and an extension to our education centre.”
Chairman, John Bruce, added: “We know from Lord Darzi’s report, published last year, that the way ahead is for services to be developed closer to people’s homes. The hospital directors and governors have been actively involved in considering how
we can develop our services in the community so patients do not have to travel far for tests, treatment and follow-up appointments.
“We have seen a steady rise in our Foundation Trust membership and are determined to build on the strong and meaningful community engagement we have
fostered.”
The report will be presented to the Trust Board at the hospital’s Annual General Meeting at 10am on Thursday, September 24 in the Clifftown Room, Saxon Hall, Aviation Way, Southend. All are welcome to attend.
