Chippenham Community Hospital
Salisbury masons help local people affected by stroke and prostate cancer
Date : - 17/09/2009
Freemasons from Salisbury based Elias De Derham Lodge have donated £7,000 to the Salisbury District Hospital Stars Appeal by funding state-of-the-art equipment for two important areas of the hospital’s work.

Some of the mason’s contribution will be used to purchase specialist 24 hour monitoring equipment that will be used to diagnosis 'silent' arrhythmias, which can be a risk factor for stroke. The monitor can be used both inside and outside of hospital, giving patients greater flexibility when their investigations are performed. Every year around 350 local people who have had a stroke are treated at Salisbury District Hospital.

The donation will also fund a flow meter to assist the work of surgeons assessing patients with urinary symptoms, many of whom have prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in men in the UK, with approximately 35,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Yet early detection of the disease can result in a cure in most cases. For more advanced cases, progress can be delayed for many years.

The Worshipful Master of the Elias de Derham Lodge said: “As Freemasons, we are committed to supporting local people in our community and we are delighted to support the Stars Appeal. A number of our fellow masons have been affected by strokes and prostate cancer so this contribution has special significance.”

Judy Cronan, Stroke Nurse Coordinator said : “We are extremely grateful to the Masons for their generous donation to the stroke fund to enable us to purchase this important monitoring equipment. If arrhythmias are diagnosed promptly, then appropriate treatment can be commenced and this risk factor for stroke is reduced.”

The Elias de Derham Lodge is the oldest Lodge in Salisbury and is thought to date back to 1720. It takes its name from Elias of Derham, the master mason designer generally cited as the architect of Salisbury Cathedral. ENDS

Notes to Editors

The Stars Appeal raises money to create the best possible experience for the 300,000 people who rely on Salisbury District Hospital. It funds extra care and equipment over and above that provided by the NHS. The Appeal benefits all wards and departments. It also raises money for major projects. Thanks to the generous support of the local community, the Appeal has already funded two major projects, including providing special treatment and diagnostic equipment for premature and critically-ill babies and creating a highly advanced keyhole cancer surgery suite.
