Albany Medical Center |
Children’s Hospital Receives Grant to Support Childhood Cancer Research |
Date : - 21/01/2009 |
Albany Medical Center has received a $27,000 grant from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to continue to support a full-time research associate at the Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Albany Med. By having a full-time research associate on staff, the child cancer program has the ability to expand participation in clinical studies conducted by the Children’s Oncology Group (COG)—a worldwide clinical trial cooperative organization.
The research associate came on full-time last year after an initial $22,500 grant from the foundation. “Over the past year, St. Baldrick’s has afforded us the opportunity to open several new clinical trials and protocols that we were able to offer as treatment options to our patients,” said Vikramjit Kanwar, M.D., assistant professor of pediatric hematology and oncology and interim principal investigator for the Children’s Oncology Group at Albany Med. “We are delighted to be able to continue providing the latest treatments for our patients, and thankful to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for their support of—and dedication to—the Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Albany Med.”
The research associate focuses on managing and controlling all aspects of patient enrollment in clinical trials—which allows physicians to offer the latest, cutting edge COG protocols to patients. Additional responsibilities include collecting patient data, supporting families, and maintaining onsite COG research efforts.
COG was established in 2000 and is supported by the National Cancer Institute. It consists of more than 240 participating hospitals and more than 2,000 physician members. Patients around the world are enrolled in COG-defined protocols for therapeutic and non-therapeutic trials to prove scientific, medical and ethical success in the field of childhood cancer research.
The Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders is the only one of its kind in the region. More than 700 patients visit the center annually. The center is staffed by four full-time hematology/oncology physicians, nine nurses, a research associate and several child life specialists and social workers.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation awards grants to research organizations with the goal of “Shaving the Way to Conquer Kids’ Cancer.” The grants help fill crucial funding gaps at medical institutions where children are treated for cancer. Because treatment typically given to children with cancer causes their hair to fall out, St. Baldrick’s volunteers around the world have their heads shaved in public in return for pledges of financial support.
Albany Medical Center is northeastern New York’s only academic health sciences center. It consists of Albany Medical College, Albany Medical Center Hospital and the Albany Medical Center Foundation, Inc. Additional information about Albany Medical Center can be found at www.amc.edu.
