Construction begins on Baptist Memphis’ expanding ER |
Date : - 02/10/2008 |
Baptist Memorial Health Care officials broke ground today on Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis’ $14 million emergency room renovation, signaling the beginning of construction to expand the existing building.
The project will add an MRI machine and a CT scanner; and will reconfigure the ER so all patients will have private rooms, increasing ER capacity to a total of 54 treatment rooms. It also will create a separate waiting area for the pediatric ER. The hospital’s ER last was expanded in 1994, when it was designed to accommodate 48,000 to 50,000 patients a year. In 2007, the Baptist Memphis ER saw 54,300 patients.
The first phase of the project – expanding the ER parking area – began this summer and is expected to be complete in early October. After construction is complete on the building expansion – which will add nearly 7,000 square feet of space – about 14,000 square feet of space will be renovated. The entire project is expected to be complete by the summer of 2010, and patient care will continue as usual during the renovation.
“We’re making great progress on the renovation,” said Jason Little, administrator and CEO of Baptist Memphis. “This project is very important because it will enable us to enhance the emergency care we deliver. We take seriously our responsibility to see every ER patient who comes through our doors, and this renovation will help ensure we can continue to do that for years to come.”
The Baptist Memphis campus includes the 706-bed hospital that is the flagship of the Baptist Memorial Health Care system. It serves as a major referral center for patients from across the Mid-South and offers many diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitation services. The hospital has added hundreds of beds in the past few years, with the opening of a new patient tower and the Baptist Heart Institute. Consumers have rated Baptist Memphis their most preferred hospital for overall health care services in an independent National Research Corp. poll for the past 13 years in a row, and according to HealthGrades®, Baptist Memphis’ cardiac surgery, stroke care and gastrointestinal surgery programs were among the top 5 percent in the nation in 2008, resulting in the facility receiving the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™.
