Klein Receives Barnes-Jewish Foundation President's Award |

Clayton resident Samuel Klein, MD, has been awarded the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation President’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Klein, a pioneer in nutrition and obesity research and treatment, is the William H. Danforth, Professor of Medicine and Nutritional Science and chief of geriatrics and nutritional science at Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr. Klein received the award at the annual Foundation banquet Sept. 16.
“The President’s Award honors a recipient’s lifelong example of leadership and giving among one of the most talented and dedicated physicians in the world,” says Andy Ziskind, MD, president of Barnes-Jewish Hospital. “Sam Klein life’s work is a reflection of the power of giving.”
Dr. Klein, who has been on the faculty of Washington University since 1994, is director of the School of Medicine’s Center for Human Nutrition, one of only eight nutrition centers funded by the National Institutes of Health. This year, he received the University’s Daniel P. Schuster Distinguished Investigator Award in Clinical and Translational Science.
His many leadership roles at the medical center include directing Washington University’s Center for Applied Research Sciences and Veronica and Robert Atkins Center of Excellence in Obesity Medicine, and serving as medical director of the University’s Weight Management Center and Barnes-Jewish Hospital Nutrition Support Services.
He has also held leadership positions with the North American Association for the Study of Obesity, the National Institutes of Health Integrative Physiology of Obesity and Diabetes Study Section and the American Gastroenterological Association’s Nutrition and Obesity Council.
The President’s Award also recognizes Dr. Klein’s extensive community screening and education outreach efforts, funded by supporters including the Yawitz Fund, the Atkins Foundation and the Kilo Diabetes and Vascular Research Foundation, as well as the Barnes-Jewish Foundation.
