Memorial Hospital Implements Identity Theft Prevention Process |
Date : - 01/05/2009 |
Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center is now asking patients for photo identification (ID) as required by the new Identity Theft Rules, a.k.a. “Red Flag” regulations, enacted recently by the Federal Trade Commission. These new regulations require financial institutions and creditors such as hospitals and other health care providers to develop identity theft prevention procedures.
Beginning May 1, 2009, every patient will be asked to provide photo identification upon each visit to the hospital. A copy of the ID card will be made and attached to the patient’s medical record. Examples of valid photo IDs are driver’s license, work photo ID card, law enforcement or military ID card, or any other photo identification that includes the individual’s full name. This new patient registration procedure is designed to help safeguard patients against financial and medical identify theft.
Financial identity theft occurs when someone unlawfully accesses an individual’s records and uses the information to exploit the financial accounts of the victim. Medical identity theft occurs when a person’s name and other aspects of their identity (such as insurance information) are used to obtain medical services. Since health records contain Social Security numbers, home addresses and phone numbers, as well as financial and insurance information, new measures have been adopted by hospitals and other health care providers which will aid in detecting red flags that indicate a pattern, practice or specific activity indicating a possible existence of identity theft.
