| Regional Medical Center of San Jose Named a Robotic Epicenter |

San Jose, CA - Intuitive Surgical – the maker of the da Vinci system – has designated Regional Medical Center of San Jose a da Vinci robotic training center where surgeons from across the nation and the world come to learn best-in-class robotic techniques at Regional’s well established da Vinci program. Regional is the very first da Vinci Single Site training center on the West Coast and one of only twenty-two centers in the United States. Surgeons will train with Dr. Huy T. Nguyen, Regional’s Medical Director of Robotic Surgery Program who performs sophisticated, minimally invasive procedures.
"The Single-Site procedure is more precise and the 3D visualization of the surgical field is superior as compared to the conventional laparoscopic approach, which is only two dimensional,"says Dr. Nguyen. "The integration of robotic technology allows surgeons to perform cholecystectomies (gallbladder removal) in a less complicated manner." Dr. Nguyen adds that most people who require gallbladder removal are candidates for the robotic single-incision surgery.
Medical benefits for single-site robotic surgery patients include a potentially shorter recovery, minimized pain, reduced blood loss and complications. There is an added cosmetic benefit of virtually no visible scarring because there’s only one incision in the umbilicus (belly button), instead of four.
Regional is one of the busiest single site robotic surgery centers in the world. Dr. Nguyen is one of only a handful of surgeons across the nation specially trained in this robotic-assisted procedure and has done the most procedures on the West Coast of the United States.
