Date : - 28/09/2009 |
September 28, 2009. – Dr. Brent Thompson, Pharm.D., Director of Pharmacy at Kanabec Hospital and Consultant Pharmacist for Villa Healthcare Center, Mora, Minnesota, was elected to serve as the Minnesota Pharmacists Association (MPhA) President Elect for the 2009/2010 term. Thompson previously served the MPhA Board of Directors as Member At Large, and assumed his new title of president elect during the MPhA Annual Meeting June 28, 2009. His term as MPhA President will begin June 27, 2010 at the conclusion of next year’s MPhA Annual Meeting.
“Brent is a tremendous asset to our organization, and we are lucky to have him as a member of our staff.” Said Randy Ulseth, Kanabec Hospital CEO. “Brent is a leader and a dedicated part of our management team. On behalf of all of Kanabec Hospital, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate him on this honor.”
Thompson earned his Pharm.D. degree at North Dakota State University, and has been a member of MPhA since 1999. His past and current committee involvement in MPhA includes Professional Affairs, Member Services, Patient Safety, Technician Competency Task Force, Technician Subcommittee, and Hospital Academy. He also carries memberships with American Pharmacists Association, American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists, American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, Minnesota Society of Health Systems Pharmacists, and Minnesota Rural Health Association. His areas of interest and expertise include patient safety, information technology, professional advocacy, leadership and education.
In addition to Thompson’s pharmacy professional leadership, he is also passionate about our future. He introduces high school students to pharmacy through a Careers Exploration class, takes post secondary students through the SIP program, and has been precepting University of Minnesota interns since 2004. As a community leader, Thompson is a member of the Pine County Ag Society Board of Directors. Each year, thousands of kids and their families come to enjoy the Pine County Fair, run by the Ag Society. His passion, second only to pharmacy, is deer hunting in which he serves as Habitat Director for the Jim Jordan Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association. This organization raises funds to send 35-50 area youth to a week long, hunter education camp, in Northern Minnesota, each year.
Since the beginning of my professional life, I’ve felt a great responsibility to belong to and be actively involved in MPhA. Being part of committees, task forces, and the board of directors has been a special experience. Throughout my time as a pharmacist I have been surrounded by wonderful people who deserve the credence for the changes I have been able to effect or accomplish. I am fortunate to have great mentors in the pharmacy family. I feel I have a good understanding of the challenges facing American health systems and a continued comfort in having incredible pharmacists leading the changes our patients deserve. It would be a tremendous honor to serve as your president and continue pushing forward the amazing care pharmacists provide patients.” |
