Union Hospital |
UH Honored as a Top 100 Hospital in the Nation |
Date : - 24/04/2009 |
Union Hospital has been named one of the nation’s 100 top hospitals by Thomson Reuters. The award recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in nine measurements of patient care and hospital operations.
“This is an outstanding accomplishment for Union Hospital, its employees, medical staff, and volunteer leadership,” said William Harding, president and CEO. “This recognition confirms to our community and patients that Union Hospital has surpassed very high standards in the areas that really count: clinical quality, patient safety, customer service, and operating efficiency.”
Thomson Reuters has been naming the top 100 hospitals since 1993 and this is the first time Union Hospital has achieved this recognition. Union Hospital was founded in 1906 and continues today as a locally owned and managed, not-for-profit community hospital located on a 27-acre campus in Dover.
“The 100 top hospitals program winners have raised the bar again this year, delivering a higher level of reliable care and greater value for their communities,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement at Thomson Reuters.
Harding said Thomson Reuters evaluated 3,000 hospitals around the country, comparing them in five categories including major teaching hospitals, teaching hospitals, large (250 or more beds), medium (100 to 249 beds) and small (25 to 99 beds) hospitals. Thomson Reuters uses public information to compare hospitals including Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the federal Medicare and Medicaid Hospital Compare data set.
A total of 1,103 medium size hospitals in the U.S. were evaluated. “Union was one of 20 hospitals in the medium size category named to the top 100 list so we are in some very elite company, Harding said.”
Jack Dooling of Dover is chairman of the Union Hospital Board of Trustees and says winning a place in the 100 top hospitals program is evidence of the great teamwork that has built an outstanding community hospital.
“We’ve accepted the challenge to improve our clinical quality and patient safety, boost customer service quality, and achieve financial stability,” Dooling said. Succeeding in one or two of those areas is challenging enough, but Union Hospital has surpassed national benchmarks in all three. Speaking for the Board of Trustees I wish to congratulate Bill Harding and his management team, the employees, and the medical staff of Union Hospital for the outstanding teamwork that has produced this national honor.”
Thomas Kelly, D.O., MPH, vice president of medical affairs, expressed his appreciation for the long term commitment from hospital staff to quality improvement.
“This is a tremendous acknowledgement of the commitment to quality and safety within our organization. This achievement is confirmation of a long term strategic plan for quality improvement that has shown progressive results over the last five years. This is an organization-wide achievement and all of the employees have contributed to the success of the hospital,” Kelly said.
Harding says the real significance of identifying the nation’s top 100 hospitals is the potential impact on human lives.
“If all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated at Union Hospital and the other top 100 hospitals in the nation, the results would be tremendous,” Harding said.
Thomson Reuters estimated that if all hospitals in the United States met the standards set by the 100 top hospitals
* More than 107,500 additional patients would survive
* Nearly 132,000 patient complications would be
avoided.
* The average patient stay would decrease by nearly
half a day.
* Expenses would decline by $5.9 billion. |
