Weight-loss surgery available at Baptist East
Date : - 07/01/2011
Baptist Hospital East has been named an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence®.

The Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric (weight-loss) surgery. All bariatric surgeries performed at Baptist East are minimally-invasive, contributing to favorable outcomes.

Baptist Hospital East's Bariatric Center offers weight-loss surgery using the LAP-BAND® and REALIZE(TM) band. This type of surgery has helped many seriously overweight individuals achieve and maintain significant long-term weight loss. Health problems associated with excess weight also usually improve after surgery, including problems with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and joint pain.

Through a series of small incisions in the abdomen, the FDA-approved LAP-BAND Adjustable Gastric Banding System is placed around the top of the stomach to create a smaller stomach pouch and secured in place. This results in the ability to control hunger and achieve a feeling of fullness. The LAP-BAND is adjustable, meaning the inflatable band can be tightened or loosened to help the patient reduce food intake. The adjustment can be made in the physician office, following surgery, and does not require a hospital visit.

The surgery is performed as an outpatient or same-day surgery. A hospital stay of less than 24 hours can be expected.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), candidacy for weight-loss surgery is based on several factors including BMI, or body mass index. To calculate your BMI, use our calculator.

The NIH states that being more than 20 percent overweight is a serious health risk. Obesity-related medical conditions are linked to more than 300,000 deaths each year, only after smoking-related deaths.

To find out if you are a candidate for this outpatient, minimally invasive procedure, and to learn more about weight-loss surgery, attend a free, physician-led seminar:
