| Women's Only 5K Walk & Run nears |

More than 1,500 women of all ages will take to the streets around The Women’s Hospital of Greensboro for the 16th Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run. The event is Saturday, Oct. 4.
The run raises money for the Mammography Scholarship Fund at The Breast Center of Greensboro at The Women’s Hospital. The money stays in this community to provide mammograms to women who might not otherwise get one.
Dr. Lynn Smith will be one of the many participants wearing a breast cancer survivor’s T-shirt. “All women should have access to appropriate education and diagnostic testing like mammography,” Smith says. “We need to work together to make a world in which breast cancer is detectable, cured and eventually preventable because of early detection in all women.”
The Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run is perfect for everyone from the casual walker, who enjoys it as a social event, to competitive runners. The Women’s Only usually attracts seeded runners and past Olympic athletes and offers $7,250 in prizes. Competitive chip timing is provided to runners.
The course begins and ends at The Women’s Hospital and takes women through the Latham Park trail and then past the Moses Cone Health System Regional Cancer Center. The 3.1-mile course is USTF certified.
Events geared for the whole family feature a Girls’ Only “mini-race” for girls up to age 6 that starts at 8:15 a.m. The main race begins at 9:30 a.m. The awards ceremony follows at 10:30 a.m. A Women’s Expo, featuring exhibits geared toward women, is from 7:30 to 11 a.m. There also will be a Children’s & Family Expo with a poster-making area where dads and kids can create posters to cheer on their favorite runners.
Registration for the Women’s Only is $30. The Girls’ Only Mini Walk/Run for girls 6 and younger is $10. Participants can register online at www.womensonlyrun.com or at The Women’s Hospital Education Center on Friday, Oct. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m.
