Ours may not the biggest hospital in Alaska, but we are the best. In addition to our top-to-bottom dedication to patient safety and quality, our patients, employees, volunteers and physicians tell us they appreciate the cohesive and friendly atmosphere in our facility. We are known for our feeling of "family," which means when you enter our doors, you are not just a patient. You are a mother, daughter, son, father, grandfather or grandmother. You are a loved one, not the illness, accident or disease that brought you to us. Visitors from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement said it the best: “(Alaska Regional's) clinical results are impressive, but it is their approach to patient care that touched us the most.”
Alaska Regional was the first hospital in the state with an air ambulance program. We brought the first surgical robot to Alaska, and we're using it for heart, prostate and gynecological surgery. Our campus houses the largest medical oncology group for treatment of cancer, and we are home to the state's first Joint Commission-certified Primary Stroke Center. We pioneered the first off pump heart surgery in the state, the use of cryoablation for prostate cancer treatment, catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation, and we were the first in Alaska to offer laparoscopic bariatric
History Of Alaska Regional Hospital
Alaska Regional Hospital was born in 1963 as Anchorage Presbyterian Hospital, located at 8th and L Street downtown. This predecessor to Alaska Regional was a joint venture between local physicians and the Presbyterian Church. In 1976 the hospital moved to its present location on DeBarr Road, and is now a 254-bed licensed and accredited facility.
For more than 40 years Alaska Regional has been fulfilling the medical needs of Alaskans, continually improving the scope of services and skills available within the state. In 1994, Alaska Regional joined with HCA, giving Alaskans access to the advanced medical resources of one of the nation’s largest healthcare providers.
With more than 1,000 employees and a medical staff of over 450 independent practitioners, Alaska Regional offers a broad spectrum of health services to the community. The hospital is the designated Shriners clinic facility in Alaska, and free immunization clinics are held monthly for area schoolchildren. Other services include free prostate cancer screenings, health education seminars and support groups for cancer and stroke survivors. Alaska Regional is the only non-military hospital in the state with its own landing strip, allowing the hospital’s LifeFlight Air Ambulance to transport critical care patients from the plane directly the 24-hour Emergency Room. Alaska Regional even offers free valet parking to patients and visitors.
In 1995, 1998, 2001, and 2007, the hospital was accredited by The Joint Commission, the nation's leading healthcare monitoring organization.
Alaska Regional is dedicated to supporting local events and organizations that promote healthcare and public safety in the state. Some of these include the Cancer Society, Muscular Dystrophy Association, American Heart Association, Blood Bank of Alaska, Abused Women's Aid in Crisis, the 5 Miler for Men's Cancer Research and many others.
Alaska Regional is proud of its ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality healthcare in Alaska. From starting lives to saving lives, one generation to the next. Alaska Regional Hospital.
