Alhambra Hospital Medical Center History
Alhambra Hospital Medical Center, the first solely Chinese Owned hospital in Southern California of the United States, is a 144-bed general acute care hospital. The hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
The hospital is conveniently located in the business district of the City of Alhambra in the Los Angeles County, about 3 miles from downtown Los Angeles. The 6 - story building sits on a spacious 5.5 acre with a 20,000 square foot adjacent lot for future expansion.
The Hospital was originally established in 1924 and moved to its current location in 1974. Prior to being sold to a Taiwanese philanthropist Mr. Wang in 1991, it was owned by the City of Alhambra and operated by a non-profit corporation. Since the sale of the Hospital in 1991, the Hospital has remained as a for-profit, private owned facility. In 1998, due to the expansion of the his business ventures in Taiwan, which required much of his time, Mr. Wang decided to sell the Hospital to AHMC, Inc. Due to the change of the ownership, the hospital's name was changed to Alhambra Hospital Medical Center.
Alhambra Hospital Medical Center presently employs over 600 employees, each of whom is committed to providing the highest quality, personalized medical care to the community. Since the Los Angeles area has a diversified ethnic population consisting of Caucasians, Asians, Hispanics and Blacks, the hospital's operational mission is aimed at serving the different needs of each individual ethnic group.
Exemplary service access to Alhambra Hospital Medical Center is assured and provided to all patients. The Emergency Room is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Also, the Occupational Health Center, managed by the Emergency Room, is able to handle industrial injuries, as well as
pre-employment physicals for companies in the area.
In addition to the Emergency Room, the hospital also has several departments specifically designed to render appropriate care based upon the severity of illness and the complexity of each case. Specialized units include Intensive / Coronary Care Unit, Definitive Observation Unit (Telemetry), Medical / Surgical, Subacute Unit and an Acute Rehabilitation Center.
The Hospital has an active out-patient surgery department to serve patients needing surgery without requiring overnight hospitalization.
Other ancillary services include radiology, laboratory, cardiopulmonary services, physical, occupational and speech therapy.
Alhambra Hospital Medical Center currently maintains a professional staff of over 300 medical doctors from 32 different specialties.
Alhambra Hospital Medical Center offers several community services, either free of charge or at a nominal fee. AHMC sponsors regular blood pressure screenings at several senior centers and also health education seminars, in both English and Mandarin. Free transportation is available to patients to and from their homes, doctor's offices and the hospital. A Physician Referral Service is offered through the hospital's community service hotline (626) 4-HEALTH.
