History Of Caldwell County Hospital

What do Cumberland College, the first Princeton Hospital and Princeton Health Care Manor have in common? Their location… Also, the brick from the old college was used to build the first hospital.

A snake entwined around a rod or staff is the symbol of medicine and the insignia of the American Medical Association. It might also be said that a snake was responsible for the birth of Caldwell County War Memorial Hospital. On a warm June night in 1945, a chicken snake found its way into a patient room of the old hospital.

Needless to say, the patient was terrified and the community was horrified. It has been said that this event was on the national news. Often times good does come from bad incidents.

The burden of a new hospital was very much on the minds of members of Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Elks Club and Fiscal Court. On June 14, 1946, the organization which was to bring success to the effort was formed.

May 22, 1947 was designated as “H-Day”. Normal business activities were put aside for a one day all-out fund raising effort. A group of over 200 workers canvassed the city block by block and the county section by section with $78,000.00 pledged for the new hospital by the end of the day. Gifts continued to grow to slightly over $100,000.00. It was the most successful fund raising event ever held in Caldwell County on any one day.

Ground breaking took place on June 19, 1949.

Dedication services for the 39 bed hospital were held on May 14, 1951 by Governor Lawrence Wetherby. Bill Powell, staff writer for the Paducah Sun, wrote: Dedication exercises for the $400,000.00 Caldwell County War Memorial Hospital were held today, and the program included more than a modernistic red-brick building donated to serving the sick of the community.

The heart of its culmination of a community-wide campaign became a national model and sign-posted the way to new hospitals for other small towns.

Caldwell County Hospital opened at its present location May 14, 1951. The first patient was Mrs. Frank Wood (she was transferred from the old hospital). When she arrived, there were 19 staff members and her.

The first baby was born that same night to Mrs. Albert Holeman. The physician was Dr. Frank Giannini.

In 1953, Thomas Simmons, manager of the Capitol Theater, took the job as hospital administrator and held this position for 20+ years.

The present facility had additions in 1962, 1967, and 1978.

The original corporate name was Caldwell County Memorial Hospital. In 1947 the word “War” as added. In 1976, the name was expanded to “Caldwell County War Memorial Hospital and Skilled Nursing Facilities, Inc. At the March 16, 1981 meeting, the Board of Directors resolved to change the name to Caldwell County Hospital.

In 1998, the Governing Board entered into a management agreement with Quorum Health Resources, LLC for full management services.
