Lanark County to Expand Ambulance Coverage in Lanark Highlands |
Date : - 22/09/2006 |
The Emergency Response Vehicle patrol of Lanark Highlands and part of Tay Valley Township is expanding to 24 hours, seven-days-a-week for a six-month trial period, beginning October 1, 2006.
Lanark County Council approved the six-month trial at a recent meeting. Previously, the ERV patrolled the area from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Lanark County Ambulance Service Manager Jim McIsaac said the change was proposed to County Council after an analysis of call response times for the area. “After the six-month trial we will analyze the new response times and County Council will decide whether to make the expanded coverage permanent or look at other alternatives,” McIsaac said.
Staffed by a fully certified paramedic, the four-wheel drive ERV is fully equipped with a cardiac defibrillator and other ambulance equipment. “The paramedic can provide symptom relief medication and other emergency care until an ambulance arrives for transport,” McIsaac said.
McIsaac said the Lanark County Ambulance Service has received great assistance from the Township of Lanark Highlands, which is providing accommodation to the ERV crew in the local community centre during the six-month trial.
The area has been patrolled by an ERV for eight hours a day, five days a week since July 2002. “We have certainly had an increase in call volume in the area since then,” McIsaac said.
The Lanark County Ambulance Service has been operated by the Almonte General Hospital since September 2000. |
