Cancer pain tool trial - recruitment complete |
Date : - 29/12/2010 |
The Palliative Care Service at Addenbrooke’s is a participating centre in a trial of the Edinburgh Pain Assessment Tool. The aim of this study is to find out if introducing a new system called the Edinburgh Pain Assessment Tool (EPAT) helps to improve cancer pain control when patients are admitted to hospital. The trial involves 18 regional cancer centres and 1,800 patients.
Addenbrooke’s is a relatively small recruiting centre compared to other specialist cancer hospitals and yet has recruited their complement of patients in a relatively short time.
Karen Blesic has been Lead Research Nurse over the two year period. She says of the study:
“I feel the EPAT tool has been incredibly important in the identification and management of pain in the D9 oncology ward. It has been an honour to be involved in this trial and I hope the findings of this trial pave the way to a more effective pain management in oncology patients across the Trust and other hospitals.”
Dr Sara Booth says:
“This is a major achievement and a first randomised controlled trial in palliative care for D9 Oncology Ward. Karen has been an outstanding success in recruiting to this study and has been very ably assisted by Dr Rachel Kyd and Harriet McGrath who supported the Research team earlier this year whilst also working on other projects.
"The Edinburgh Pain Assessment Tool has the potential to make a significant impact on the management of cancer pain across the world and we are very proud to have taken part. "
