Fearne Cotton ‘Turns the Turf’ for The Royal Marsden |
Date : - 08/09/2009 |
Radio One presenter Fearne Cotton donned a hard hat and got stuck in with a spade to celebrate building work starting on the hospital’s new Children’s and Young Person’s Centre.
Along with some young patients, Fearne took part in a ‘turning the turf’ ceremony to mark the special occasion at the Downs Road hospital on Tuesday.
Although building work has started on the new Centre, the local community are still being asked to support the our plan appeal and help The Royal Marsden reach its £15 million target to build Europe’s leading cancer centre for children and young people.
New cancer centre
Guests at the ceremony also included representatives from Teenage Cancer Trust, the charity which helps young people fight cancer. The charity is raising £3 million to develop a dedicated state-of-the-art unit for young people with cancer, within the new Centre. Teenage Cancer Trust’s units aren’t like ordinary hospital wards. Instead, they provide an environment where teenagers can enjoy being teenagers and are treated by teenage cancer experts – a combination which means they have a much better chance in their fight against cancer.
Second visit
After the ceremony Fearne visited the current Unit where she met a host of young patients and their families and was shown the plans for the new Centre.
Fearne, who visited the Unit in December 2007, said she was delighted that she was invited to take part in the ceremony and to once again meet the young patients and staff at The Royal Marsden.
One of the young patients to meet Fearne was Hannah Coltherd, 10. Hannah is also the face of The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign our plan appeal which was launched to help reach the £15 million target needed to build the new Children’s and Young Person’s Centre.
She said: “It was great to meet Fearne. I have seen her on the television and listened to her radio show, and I really enjoyed spending the morning with her. She was great fun and was really interested in the plans for the new Centre.”
Drug-development programme
Professor Andy Pearson, who heads the Unit, said he was thrilled that work has started on new Centre.
He said: “This is such an exciting time for The Royal Marsden. The new Centre will not only double inpatient and day capacity, it will house a world-leading drug-development programme for children and teenagers where we can test new anti-cancer agents on site for the first time anywhere in the world.”
