Much Greater Success in Limiting Infection |
Date : - 29/06/2009 |
The hospital's director of infection control and prevention, consultant microbiologist Dr Tony Maggs, has told the South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's board of directors that MRSA blood infections that have developed in hospital have reduced by 84% since 2005/06.
There have been three cases over the 12-month period (April 2008 to March 2009) which were thought to have been hospital-acquired.
This means that Torbay Hospital accounts for a smaller proportion of all MRSA infection cases in the area than any other South West acute hospitals do in their own local areas. That indicates that Torbay Hospital is being more successful in minimising hospital-acquired MRSA, although this is difficult to benchmark given the level of MRSA carriage in the wider community.
Dr Tony Maggs also reported that the number of new MRSA cases across the community seems to be reducing.
Cases of Clostridium difficile have continued to fall, reducing by over 60% in the last two years. The number recorded at Torbay Hospital is the smallest of any South West acute hospital in proportion to the total number in each hospital's local area.
Torbay Hospital has also managed to keep the stomach bug norovirus at bay for much of the year, and this in turn has reduced the number of days on which any of its wards had to take the precaution of not admitting new patients, to prevent them from being potentially exposed to the infection.
The evidence was that this was achieved despite norovirus being prevalent in the local area and a significant proportion of patients arriving in hospital who were already suffering from the infection.
Torbay Hospital has introduced MRSA screening for all patients coming into hospital for planned operations or treatment, in line with the NHS requirement for universal screening, starting last month (April). The Trust Board has endorsed the hospital's ambition for there to be no hospital-acquired cases of MRSA infection this year, and no onward transmission of C difficile within the hospital.
