Winner Opens New Children’s Area with a Bang |
Date : - 10/07/2009 |
An 11–year-old Plymouth boy was the guest of honour at the opening of the new children’s area at Derriford Hospitals Emergency (A&E) Department.
Lewis Edwards, a pupil from Mount Wise Community Primary School, officially cut the ribbon on the new area, after his poster was selected as the winning design from 280 entries in a children’s poster competition.
The winner and two runners-up, Helen Thomas and Lauren Moran, were invited to attend the opening on Friday 10 July.
Lewis, Helen (14) and Lauren (5) looked round the children’s area, met hospital staff and received their prizes from Mr Potts and Truly Scumptious, courtesy of the Theatre Royal’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang production, before tucking into a 'tea party' lunch.
Lewis' prize - a family membership to all exhibits including the new jellyfish exhibition - was kindly donated by the National Marine Aquarium.
Some fun activities were also on offer including bandaging toys, learning some life support skills and enjoying entertainment from children’s entertainer, Emazdad, who went down a treat.
Sister Anita Trehane, said: “We had a lovely day, the children, the staff, everyone. Lewis did us all proud when he cut the ribbon and declared the new area open. His poster was a winner, it was both fun and clever, and everyone enjoyed looking at the poster displays, as well as around the new area.
“My colleagues and I are really looking forward to using this area now to treat children. Our staff and building contractors have worked very well together over the last six months to minimise the disruption for patients. We know that it will all be worth it when children have their own dedicated area.”
The new children’s area has been created at the Emergency (A&E) Department so children will feel less anxious and nervous, while waiting to be seen, as well as during their treatment. Previously children and adults had to share the Emergency Department which is not an ideal situation, especially for younger people.
The new children’s area was planned by a multi-disciplinary group of staff including doctors and nurses, planning, IT and other key people. During the contract period, the design was led by Pete Mugford who worked hard ensuring that the Emergency Department staff had a scheme they wanted and the contractors, KMS, had all the information they needed to build the project.
Kevin Smith, Managing Director of KMS (Contract Building Services) said: “We are delighted to have worked on another contract with Plymouth Hospitals after our recent success winning the contract to extend and refurbish the Macmillan Mustard Tree Centre. We pride ourselves on delivering a first class service on complex projects working in controlled environments and this was no exception. There are many challenges associated with working in a controlled environment such as an Emergency Department. We hope the children like the results.”
