AGH's Dr. Ed Snell Elected President of Major League Baseball Team Physicians Association |
Date : - 31/03/2009 |
Allegheny General Hospital sports medicine specialist Edward D. Snell, MD, has been elected president of Major League Baseball's Team Physicians Association.
Dr. Snell is the head team physician for the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club and Director of the Primary Sports Medicine Fellowship program at Allegheny General Hospital. Allegheny General's highly regarded sports medicine program serves as the official medical provider for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
"We congratulate Dr. Snell on his election to this important leadership role among Major League Baseball's team physicians," said Patrick J. DeMeo, MD, Director of the Division of Sports Medicine and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at AGH, and Medical Director for the Pittsburgh Pirates. "His expertise and experience will serve the league and its physicians exceptionally well."
Snell's election is the latest honor for the Pirates' medical staff. In November, Baseball Prospectus recognized the staff as the league's best with its annual Dick Martin Award. A leading publication focused on MLB's operations and activities, Baseball Prospectus said three-year results and trends for the Pirates' staff are "the best in the game."
"In 2008, the Pirates faced the challenge of keeping a young team and hard-worked staff healthy enough to stay competitive. With only 385 days lost to the DL ... the Pirates more than met the challenge. Most impressive might be the health of the pitching staff, highlighted by only 24 days lost by starters," the publication said.
As president of the Physicians Association, Dr. Snell will work with his fellow team physicians and MLB leadership on a variety of issues including safety, screening, injury risks and improving medical care for players.
Dr. Snell is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, and completed a fellowship with Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine. He is board-certified in sports medicine.
AGH and the West Penn Allegheny Health System have been the exclusive healthcare provider for the Pirates since 1999.
