Deaths spur recall of millions of cribs |
Date : - 21/10/2008 |
Two infant deaths have prompted the largest crib recall in U.S. history. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Delta Enterprise Corp., of New York, N.Y., announced the voluntary recall of more than 1.6 million Delta Enterprise drop-side cribs as part of two separate recalls.
The cribs are being recalled because of two different hazards: missing safety pegs and spring peg failure. The CPSC and Delta strongly urge anyone who owns a Delta Enterprise drop-side crib to quit using the crib and to contact Delta for a free, easy-to-install repair kit. To order a repair kit, visit www.cribrecallcenter.com.
Two 8-month-old children were killed and other children have been injured when safety pegs were missing or the spring pegs failed, creating an entrapment and suffocation hazard.
In the case of the spring pegs, the pegs can become nonfunctional if those in the base of each leg of the crib are pushed into the lower track. This can cause the drop side to detach from the crib and create a gap that can entrap an infant or toddler.
If the safety pegs are missing from the lower track, the crib locks can unlock and detach, creating a hazardous gap.
The recalls involve Delta drop-side cribs manufactured before 2006 (one model was made in 2007) that use “crib trigger lock with spring peg” and “crib trigger lock with safety peg” drop-side hardware design. Both cribs were sold at major retailers nationwide including Kmart, Wal-Mart and Target.com. They may also be sold second-hand.
The “crib trigger lock with spring peg” design was made in China and sold from January 2000 through January 2007. The “crib trigger lock with safety peg” was made in Taiwan and Indonesia and sold from January 1995 through September 2007. Cribs currently sold in retail stores are not part of the recall.
The CPSC reminds parents to periodically tighten hardware on their infants’ cribs and to make sure all moving parts are working correctly.
