Health Information Library High triglycerides the focus of new guidelines
Date : - 17/09/2012
New guidelines from The Endocrine Society emphasize the importance of getting triglyceride levels checked regularly and taking steps to keep them in a healthy range.Triglycerides, a type of fat in the blood, can be measured as part of a routine cholesterol test, called a lipid panel, which experts say adults should have at least every five years. High triglyceride levels have been linked to heart disease, stroke and other health problems. There is increasing evidence that high triglyceride levels represent a cardiovascular risk,” said Lars Berglund, MD, PhD, who chaired the task force that wrote the guidelines. "And, in addition, [a] very high triglyceride level is a risk factor for pancreatitis.”

According to The Endocrine Society, a number of factors can raise triglyceride levels, including excess weight, a lack of exercise and type 2 diabetes. In addition, some people may inherit a genetic disorder that leads to high triglycerides.

The Endocrine Society defines high triglycerides by disease risk, noting that levels above 150 mg/dL may increase heart disease risks, while levels above 2,000 mg/dL may lead to pancreatitis—a condition that can damage the pancreas and lead to diabetes.

According to the new guidelines—published in the September 2012 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism—lifestyle changes, such as weight control, exercise and a healthy diet low in saturated fat, are the frontline treatment for mild to moderately elevated triglyceride levels.

In addition, some people may also benefit from medications and supplements, such as fibrates or omega 3 fatty acid (fish oil).

The guidelines also note that certain hormonal diseases or even some medications may raise triglycerides. In such cases, treating the underlying condition or switching to another medicine may be advised.
