Munson Medical Center Honors Its Volunteers |
Date : - 02/04/2009 |
National Volunteer Appreciation Week begins with luncheon on April 19
Joe Ryder stands at the main entrance to Munson Community Health Center two days a week and greets the people who arrive.
He's one of more than 400 active volunteers who help provide the caring and friendly environment that Munson Medical Center patients, families, and visitors experience.
"I like dealing with people. You meet everybody who comes through the door," he said. "I work Monday afternoons for five hours and Friday mornings for four hours."
Munson Medical Center is paying tribute to its hard working team of volunteers with a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on Sunday, April 19, the first day of National Volunteer Week.
All of the hospital's active volunteers are invited to attend this special event from noon - 3 p.m. at the Waterfront Conference Center, 2061 U.S. 31 North, at 4 Mile Road, in Traverse City. Each volunteer may invite a spouse or guest to the luncheon.
"Our volunteers provide important services every day that help make Munson Medical Center the quality health care facility that it is," said Theresa Stachnik, manager of Volunteer Services. "Every year, the volunteers are among the hospital's strongest backers, with both their time and their financial support. We greatly appreciate all they do."
During 2008, volunteers provided $1.16 million worth of time and services to the hospital. Among their varied duties, Munson Medical Center volunteers not only greet visitors at the hospital, but help transport patients and assist people with finding their way. They also staff the registration desk at Munson Manor, help in the Emergency Department, and assist in two dozen other departments.
Ryder, who retired from Munson Medical Center and worked at Munson Community Health Center in the maintenance department and boiler room, enjoyed his time at the luncheon last year.
"It was nice to see all the other volunteers," he said.
In addition to generously donating time to the hospital, volunteers annually provide scholarships to area students who are preparing for medical careers. As a group, the volunteers also have provided more than $2 million to Munson Medical Center projects over the years, including $700,000 to the Munson Manor Hospitality House and a $500,000 pledge to the new
Emergency Department.
Ryder encourages anyone interested in volunteering to contact Munson Volunteer Services. "I would say it's very fulfilling," he said. "It's nice to be out there helping everyone."
