PET/CT IMAGING NOW AT BAYSHORE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL |
Date : - 24/09/2008 |
Important Tool Expected To Help In Diagnosing Cancer
Out-Patient Positron Emission Tomography (PET) / Computed Tomography (CT) imaging is now available at Bayshore Community Hospital.
According to Dr. Leo J. Fontana, medical director of Bayshore’s Department of Radiology, PET imaging is a diagnostic imaging procedure that shows biological functions of the body. By administering a small amount of radioactivity attached to a biological marker, PET can assess normal and abnormal physiological processes within the body. CT imaging plays a complimentary role to PET imaging by demonstrating the anatomical location of any suspected irregularity. By combining the two modalities, all diagnostic information is obtained with one procedure.
PET/CT imaging is especially useful in tumor detection, permitting physicians to detect cancers, including melanoma, lymphoma, lung, colorectal, head and neck, and ovarian cancers, with pinpoint accuracy.
Other applications include improving biopsy sampling, better cancer therapy planning, and assessment of tumor response to treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
The entire examination is generally performed in less than one hour, providing comprehensive diagnostic information quickly.
"We are very pleased to be adding PET/CT imaging to our growing arsenal of cancer treatments at Bayshore Community Hospital," said Raimonda Clark, R.N., M.A., M.Ed., President and CEO of Bayshore Community Health Services, which encompasses Bayshore Community Hospital. "This high technology tool joins digital breast MRI as our newest state-of-the-art cancer care resources available to area physicians and their patients. Patients are our top priority and we want to be at the forefront in leading them through diagnosis, recovery and remission. At Bayshore, we’re changing to change the lives of families in our community fighting cancer."
