Free health checks on offer for Africans |
Date : - 16/10/2009 |
A new healthcare project has been set up for people of African origin at St John at Hackney Church, Lower Clapton Road.
The project runs a free and confidential clinic for Africans wishing to measure their blood pressure, test their cholesterol and undergo an HIV check. Workers at the clinic will also go through a general health check with clients, including looking at healthier lifestyles, and be able to help them get in touch with a GP.
The project will run for a year initially and is a partnership between Homerton Hospital, the charity Positive East, St John at Hackney Church and the Hackney African Forum.
Mark Santos, CEO of Positive East said “Knowing your HIV status can quite literally save your life. Our HIV testing clinics are an easy way of getting taking an HIV test and they are free, fast and totally confidential and you get your result within an hour.”
Dr Sarah Creighton of Homerton Hospital said “HIV is no longer a fatal disease. With treatment, people with HIV can look forward to many decades of disease free life. We hope that by linking HIV testing with other chronic conditions such as hypertension, we can encourage more people to take an HIV test and get the treatment they need to stay healthy.”
The clinic will run on both Saturday and Wednesday. Saturdays at St John’s Church, from 12-3pm and Wednesdays at the Geffrye Community Centre in Falkirk Street, Hoxton, from 3-6pm.
